Experiences // Sights worth seeing:
TeamLab Borderless, museum
A large, interactive and magical universe with various light installations. We have been there almost every time we have been to Tokyo and you can keep seeing new landscapes and combinations. It is very popular, so if you can plan your visit on a weekday morning or evening, it is not as crowded. But always book in advance, you don't want to miss TeamLab!
Disneyland
If you are traveling with children or childlike souls who love amusement parks, Disney Land Tokyo is definitely worth a visit.
Nezu, museum
Art Museum
Mori art museum
Museum of Contemporary Art
The National Art Center
Art Museum
Götokuji Temple
A cat temple just outside of Tokyo. The temple is full of the Japanese lucky cat and in their shop you can buy a small cat yourself and add it to the temple's collection. It's always good to have a little extra luck!
Shibuya Sky, Tokyo Sky Tree and Tokyo Tower
Lookouts that provide a fantastic view over the city. Take a day trip and be blown away by the city that never ends. If you're lucky, you might see the top of Mount Fuji! If you take an evening tour, you can see the crazy city lit up by endless lights. But remember to buy tickets in advance and preferably well in advance! You can e.g. use the “Get Your Guide” app.
Sumo wrestling
If you have the opportunity to come in and watch sumo wrestling, it can be recommended. If you come out of season, you can get up early and go out and watch sumo training.
Computer games and slot machines
In Japan, they are really fond of computer games and slot machines. There are many large and quaint places that are clearly worth experiencing! If you want to take a Japanese souvenir home, it is also often in the gambling cafes that you will find Photobooth machines, where you can take real Japanese photos, with guides on how to pose. In the areas around Shibuya station and Akihabara there are many venues. This is also where you can see people driving little "Mario-kart" cars, just like in the game.
Karaoke
You've probably seen 'Lost In Translation' and if you just think it's a bit of fun to sing karaoke, then Japan is the place! You can either rent your own place or sing at a karaoke bar. There are plenty of karaoke places near Shibuya Station.
Onsen
"Onsen" is a Japanese term for hot springs. If you are traveling around Japan, stop by an onsen located in the mountains somewhere. There are lots of amazing places. If you are in Tokyo, you can take a day trip out to the onsen. Be aware that you are naked in the onsen. There is absolutely nothing sexual about it! It is therefore not allowed to wear swimwear, but you will be given a kimono on arrival, which you can wear. Here are our suggestions for some nice places:
Head spa
Japan is known for their fantastic "head spa". This is a must when in Japan. There are many places where you can get one. We haven't yet tried that it wasn't a good experience. Here you will find our best recommendations:
- "Aveda" hair salons
- Ritt's head spa in Shibuya. Supposed to be one of the first places in Tokyo where they started doing head spa. The place doesn't look like much, but it can really be recommended.
