Where to live?

There are many beautiful areas in Tokyo. Some of our favorite places are Shibuya, Daikanyama, Naka-meguro and Shinjuku. Shibuya and Shinjuku are the most central, but also the most touristy. You can also book a hotel slightly outside the city centre. Among other things, we have lived here in Taitou, which is 40 minutes from the center by Metro. This may sound like a lot, but with the long distances everywhere in Tokyo and the comfortable subways, this is not a problem as you will be traveling a lot anyway. It can be nice to have a base in a quiet place, and then go out to all the sights from there. But without a doubt, it is an advantage to live close to a station. Tokyo is huge, so once you've been on a day trip, you'll be glad you didn't have to walk so far to your hotel.

Most hotel rooms in Tokyo are small, so if you want to find something decent, book well in advance. But even if you book a double room, it does not necessarily mean that the room is bigger, just that the bed is bigger. Prices in Tokyo are often more expensive than in the rest of Japan.

Ryokan

In addition, you can find many wonderful "ryokan", which is a traditional Japanese inn/hotel. It's a nice way to live a little more Japanese than in a normal hotel. Here you often sleep on a tatami mat or futon on the floor. A third option is Airbnb. There are many good offers, but often the apartments are as small as a hotel room and the price is almost the same.

Here are our best picks for hotels and ryokan:

- Onsen Ryokan Yuen Shinjuku

- Hotel The Knot Shinjuku

- Cerulean Tower Tokyo Hotel

- Mustard Hotel Shibuya

- Hotel Gajoen Tokyo

- Hotel Vintage Tokyo
